Choose a Specialized Furniture Carrier

Posted by David Purvis on Thursday, February 11 2016 in Specialized Carriers

I just finished reading Jerry Epperson’s February 8, 2016 article in Furniture/Today, “Why I’m sticking with real brick-and-mortar stores.”  What a marvelous delineation between the brick-and-mortar and the Internet furniture buying experience.  It was clear, passionate, and complete.  As Jerry shared his story he took a jab at Amazon Prime’s free delivery.  Since he mentioned transportation, I would like to elaborate on the furniture industry’s very own private fleet and the unique services provided by specialized furniture carriers.

Jerry’s situation includes a new 8th floor condo, lots of new furniture, and a freight elevator requiring scheduling and payment.  What Jerry failed to mention was the careful handling, unboxing, setup, deluxing, and the removal of packing materials (lots and LOTS of packing materials) which is also required.  Many of you will be quick to remind me that blanket wrapping could eliminate having to deal with the packing materials at the job-site.  You are correct, but blanket wrapping still involves all the special services.  It only moves the execution of the services from Jerry’s condo to the carrier’s warehouse or the brick-and-mortar warehouse.  Blanket wrapping also exacerbates the need for “careful handling.”

These services are typically provided by brick-and-mortar stores and are sometimes taken for granted.  They are typically provided because brick-and-mortar stores know their customers will not/cannot be satisfied until delivery, installation, and cleanup are complete.  Therefore, brick-and-mortar stores deliver the furniture themselves or use the retailer’s version of specialized furniture carriers: the white glove, home delivery carrier.

Buy an iPad from Amazon and UPS will be glad to drop it at your door.  If you purchase a new bedroom suite… do yourself a favor and choose a specialized furniture carrier.
